Sports branding allows fanatics to identify with their team and feel included in something bigger than themselves. Developing an emotional connection with a team can increase loyalty, build positive associations, and increase interaction by consumers, sponsors, players, and investors alike. Often, brands need enhancement or updates to better fit their audience or adjust to changing times and climates. Pressure and controversy were at an all-time high for the Washington Redskins, or Washington Football Team as they were briefly known, making the team a sensible selection for our Sports Marketing rebrand project. Maintaining a sense of the original brand to remain recognizable and connected to the original fan base was important, but a more respectable new name, mascot, and logo was long overdue.
